For decades the world’s genebanks have conserved genetic diversity and supplied stakeholders with the raw materials of basic research and breeding. Recent development of next generation gene discovery tools together with associated phenotypic and genotypic datasets based on genebank foundations have opened completely new opportunities for the interrogation of genebank resources, for the delivery of new and useful genetic variation to agriculture.
