Call For Papers - CFP
North African Literature in English:An International ConferenceDate: 27 – 28 March 2019Venue: Houmt Souk, Djerba, TunisiaDeadline for abstracts: 31 Dec. 2018Call for PapersIn collaboration with the Department of English, Faculty of Arts and Sciences, Wahat, University of Benghazi, Libya, the Tunisian Association for Comparative Studies organizes its second international conference on “North African Literature in English” on 27-28 March 2019.In his commentary on M. Keith Booker’s The African Novel in English: An Introduction (1998), Huma Ibrahim wrote that “The Maghrib, though as much a part of Africa as Southern Africa, is left out.” The Maghrib “is left out” simply because tradition holds that in a Francophone area there is no literature of English expression. The aim of this conference is to demonstrate that both Booker and Ibrahim are wrong. A nascent North African literature in English is becoming graphic and cannot elude bookworms or bibliophiles. There are North African poets, short story writers, and novelists publishing works in English and winning awards at home and abroad. This conference invites proposals that canvass the region for such literature and such writers. Who are they? What kind of literary niche are they involved in? What are their concerns and plights? What literary schools do they adhere to? What sorts of questions animate women’s writings? Thus the conference will allow us to produce a compilation of North African literature in English in “Who’s Who” form. It is a challenging work for those who believe that North Africa is a Francophone area only.We welcome abstracts/proposals from scholars, academics, and graduate students.
