    Call For Papers - CFP

The 2nd Asian Symposium on Tourism for Development (AST4D 2018) is a small, two-day, peer-reviewed international conference held on Sunday and Monday, April 29-30, 2018.

AST4D 2018 will be held in partnership with the 5th Conference on Human Development in Asia and the 4th Asian Conference on Disaster Response and Management. Presenters of these international, peer-reviewed conferences will receive certificates of presentation and inclusion in the proceedings.

Early Registration is only 25,000 JPY. All registered participants will be invited to the welcome reception and provided with a free, guided tour of Hiroshima Peace Park. The first 10 registrants will also receive a free ticket for the Miyajima Shrine Island Tour, which includes round-trip transportation, park entrance fee and cake with tea at a Japanese tea house.

    About AST4D 2018

The key to reconciling the differences resides in sustainable tourism, defined by the UN as “Tourism that takes full account of its current and future economic, social and environmental impacts, addressing the needs of visitors, the industry, the environment and host communities.” Viewed in the past as an ‘alternative’ or ‘fringe’ form of tourism, today it is widely accepted and plays an integral role in generating a green economy.

Conventional tourism, especially in developing countries, is more vulnerable to the industry’s adverse effects from environmental risks like compromised ecosystems to socio-cultural conflicts arising from failure to respect, communicate and include local communities in the planning and benefit sharing. Sustainable tourism, on the other hand, reshapes the landscape by prioritizing the inextricable link between the welfare of people and the preservation of our natural and cultural heritage. The transition to sustainable tourism challenges all participants to respect host communities’ socio-cultural diversity, fairly distribute the socio-economic benefits between all stakeholders, and optimize the use of environmental resources, among others.

In our commitment to sustainable tourism, AST4D 2018 will include guided tour options to Hiroshima Peace Park and the shrine island of Miyajima — both are UNESCO World Heritage Sites!
