    Engineering innovation is the emergence of a new technology or combination of technologies that offer worthwhile benefits. This does not delineate the degree of departure from existing technology and practices major innovations require new skills. Levels of market understanding, leaps in new processing abilities, and systems throughout the organization. With the advancement in innovation in engineering and technology, these fields become more and more sophisticated and interdisciplinary-interacted. In a fast changing business environment constant innovation is essential to keep ahead of the competition. The competitive implications of innovation framework are based on the concept of translucence. The development of new business and product lines based on breakthrough innovation is critical for renewal of an industry's competitive position and requires manage-ment practices that differ substantially from those required for incremental innovation. While incremental innovations are typically extensions to current products offerings or logical and relatively minor extensions to existing processes radical product innovation involve the development or applications of significantly new technologies or ideas into markets that are either non-existence or require dramatic behavior changes to existing market. These radical innovation in turn, provide the foundation upon which future generations of products are manufactured. The industry that hold the largest share in one product generation often fail to maintain leadership when there is a shift to a new technology. Effectively developing radical innovations, therefore, is critical to the long term survival of many of industries in the present day scenario.

    The capacity of an innovation is to influence the established systems of production and marketing. Innovation can take many different forms, depending on the industry. The categories of innovations are closely linked to different patterns of evolution and to different managerial environments. Special emphasis should be placed on the role of incremental technical change in shaping competition and on the possibilities for a technology based reversal in the process of industrial maturity. Innovation in engineering can often but not always be more product- oriented. However, it can also involve the development of new products or systems, new ways of training staff, and new strategies for quality control.

    The National Innovation Foundation was set-up in the year 2000 to provide institutional support for scouting, spawning, sustaining and scaling up the grassroots innovations. Subsequently, after President of India declared 2010 as the decade of innovation, the National Innovation Council was formed under the aegis of the Ministry of Science & Technology to discuss, analyse and help implement strategies for inclusive innovation in India and prepare a roadmap for innovation during 2010-2020. The Institution of Engineers (India) which was incorporated under the Royal Charter back in 1935 is also committed to promote and advance the science, practice and business of engineering in all its branches in India and also to encourage inventions and investigate and make known their nature and merits. The members of this Institution, who have been holding key portfolios in different government and non-government organizations, are working relentlessly in the pursuit of achieving engineering excellence for progress of the nation.

    IEI, the largest body of professional engineers, has been for a long time advising Central and State Governments on various policy making initiatives on projects and issues of national interest involving engineering problems. The Indian Engineering Congress is the apex activity of the Institution enjoying a special status amongst the engineering fraternity. At the Indian Engineering Congress, we have a gathering of professionals and engineers from all the disciplines of engineering. The vibrant discussions and deliberations that will take place in these three days will enlighten and enrich us and also make us conscious of the increased responsibility of the engineers in promoting engineering innovation and accelerating growth of the nation in all sectors.
